Be the Light on Giving Tuesday
Today is Giving Tuesday, a global movement that inspires community,
compassion and helping those in need. Participate in this global generosity
movement by donating to one or more of the charities that are important to you.
They need your support more than ever!
Many of the races that we do as runners, virtual or in person, support
a charitable organization. Many charities also put on special events to raise
funds, such as golf outings, auctions and elaborate dinners. Obviously, many of
our races and special events have been postponed, canceled or transformed into
virtual events this year. While we are all hurting in one way or another,
during this COVID-19 Crisis, giving helps ease the pain and today is the day to
promote giving.
I’ve seen the famous quote by Mister Rogers floating around
quite a bit during our Shelter in Place orders: “When I was a boy and I would
see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me ‘Look for the
helpers. You will always find people who are helping’.”
Today, on Giving Tuesday, you can be the helper that Mister
Rogers was looking for so many years ago! There are a lot of people struggling
in this COVID-19 crisis. It could be with employment, food, health, anxiety or
depression, but many are looking for helpers right now. They are looking for
the bright light in the darkness and you can be that person!
My charity of choice for 2020 is Fxck Cancer (donate by clicking this link). As if fighting cancer isn’t hard enough, cancer
warriors are also fighting to avoid COVID-19. Cancer patients are among the
vulnerable population. Treatments compromise immune systems and COVID-19 would be particularly dangerous. Families and caregivers
need to be just as careful when going into public spaces to avoid bringing
it home. Oncologists and other healthcare providers need to be equally
as vigilant with COVID-19 in order to safely care for cancer patients as
well as their own families at home. I chose Fxck Cancer in
order to support cancer warriors like my Grandmother, parents, aunts, uncles,
friends and so many others who have fought an epic battle with cancer. I also
chose Fxck Cancer to bring awareness so that more loved ones have a better chance
of beating cancer though early detection and early treatment.
I understand that money is tight these days. When it’s not feasible
to make a donation, consider doing something else to help within your community. There
are so many ways you can give today:
- Donate to Fxck Cancer or to your own favorite charity – even a few dollars shared between multiple charities is helpful.
- Run or walk a virtual race where proceeds are donated to a charity.
- Clean out your closets or pantry and give goods to anyone that is accepting donations at this time.
- Donate blood or plasma if you are able.
- Pick up needed items for a neighbor who can’t get out.
- Create sidewalk chalk art in your subdivision.
- Sew and share masks within your community.
- Call a friend or family member to check in and see how they are doing.
- Post something inspiring or encouraging on social media to brighten someone’s day.
- Get creative and be the light that someone needs during these trying times.
Giving Tuesday is just one day to highlight how
important charitable organizations are to so many, many people. Please consider
donating to Fxck Cancer or another charitable group. If you can’t donate
today, bookmark my link or remember to donate on another day when you do have a
few extra dollars.
Happy Giving Tuesday! Thank you for brightening my day by simply

the world a better place!
